Azure for US Government meets the tactical edge
When most people think about “government cloud,” they picture secure data centers, compliance certifications and virtual machines.
That’s only half of the story.
Microsoft Azure for US Government now spans a full continuum—from classified government regions and JWCC access for the Department of Defense, all the way to ruggedized edge devices operating in disconnected environments. It is designed for:
Department of Defense – national security and warfighting missions
Intelligence Community – deeper visibility, insights and decisions
Federal civilian agencies – citizen services and data stewardship
State and local governments – community protection and modernization
At ORVIWO, we focus on the other half of the story:
how that cloud actually reaches Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and OCONUS missions through tactical vehicles, Semtech AirLink routers, AI video, rugged devices and IoT sensors.
Cloud alone is not the mission.
Cloud + tactical edge + local terrain is where the mission really lives.
A continuum of compute: from secure cloud to rugged edge
Azure for US Government gives agencies a true “cloud-to-edge” continuum:
Azure Government & classified regions for sensitive and classified workloads
Azure AI & Azure OpenAI (including GPT-4o) for advanced analytics and copilots in FedRAMP High environments
Azure Stack Edge and ruggedized hardware to bring compute, storage and AI to the tactical edge
Azure Kubernetes Service, Web Apps and Virtual Desktop to modernize mission systems and deliver them faster to the field
ORVIWO builds on top of that continuum:
Semtech AirLink XR series routers in vehicles and fixed sites
Avigilon Alta & Unity video analytics for situational awareness
Getac rugged laptops and tablets for operators and technicians
IoT / LoRaWAN sensors for infrastructure, environment and roads
Tactical Command Vehicles and mobile command posts engineered in Puerto Rico
Our job is to capture, secure and prioritize the data that really matters—and move it between the tactical edge and Azure in a way that respects bandwidth, latency and mission risk.
Four Azure for DoD mission themes, translated into ORVIWO language
Microsoft structures its DoD story around four mission themes. Here’s how ORVIWO plugs into each one.
1. Build a unified data strategy for the mission
Azure message:
Generate insights and make faster decisions, no matter where data lives—datacenters, satellites, submarines or disconnected tactical networks.
ORVIWO extension:
Ingest data from:
Semtech AirLink XR routers in patrol vehicles and remote sites
Avigilon AI cameras protecting bases, ports, pharmacies and infrastructure
IoT and LoRaWAN sensors monitoring roads, power assets and environmental conditions
Getac rugged laptops and tablets used by field teams
Route that data into Azure data lakes, Synapse and AI services in Azure Government or DoD-aligned environments.
Use Azure AI and Azure OpenAI to:
Detect anomalies in connectivity and telemetry
Score risk in road networks and critical infrastructure
Support analysts and operators with mission-focused copilots
Result: a unified mission data fabric that includes headquarters, regional offices, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and forward-deployed nodes.
2. Modernize systems for speed to innovation
Azure message:
Deliver new capabilities to servicemembers as quickly as possible using Azure Kubernetes Service, Web Apps, Virtual Desktop and multi-cloud architecture.
ORVIWO extension:
Design containerized mission apps that can:
Run in Azure for US Government
Run at the edge on Azure Stack Edge devices in vehicles, micro datacenters or shelters
Host:
Mission dashboards (Azure Web Apps)
Operator desktops (Azure Virtual Desktop)
Microservices that consume XR60/XR80 telemetry or Avigilon event streams
Wrap all of this in resilient connectivity:
5G / LTE
Starlink and satellite links
Encrypted VPNs and SD-WAN across vehicles, bases and cloud regions
Result: new mission apps can be rolled out faster, but they remain usable even in the complex connectivity reality of Puerto Rico and OCONUS locations.
3. Lead with connected cybersecurity
Azure message:
Use Azure Sentinel (SIEM) and Defender (XDR) to monitor for anomalies, connect alerts and stay ahead of advanced threats across the digital estate.
ORVIWO extension:
Feed Sentinel with logs and telemetry from:
Semtech AirLink XR routers in the field
Firewalls (FortiGate, Palo Alto Networks, Cisco, etc.)
Servers and workloads running at the edge and in the cloud
Leverage Defender to:
Protect hybrid workloads (cloud, on-prem, tactical edge)
Identify suspicious behavior across identities, devices and workloads
Correlate:
Field-level anomalies (strange network behavior in a router on a remote road, weird patterns in vehicle telemetry)
With cloud-level alerts inside Azure
Result: a connected security view that includes not only data centers and HQ, but also vehicles, islands, coastal facilities and remote clinics in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
4. Enable secure remote collaboration
Azure message:
Enable secure collaboration and remote work anytime, anywhere, while keeping data within proper boundaries—even when connectivity is intermittent.
ORVIWO extension:
Provide the connectivity fabric:
5G and LTE coverage with smart routing
SATCOM/Starlink paths for remote areas and maritime operations
Encrypted tunnels between edge nodes and Azure Government
Combine that with Azure’s collaboration stack:
Microsoft 365 and Teams for cross-agency collaboration
Azure Virtual Desktop for secure remote access to mission apps
Design graceful degradation:
When links go down during hurricanes or grid failures, local systems continue recording and buffering
Data synchronizes securely once connectivity is restored
Result: mission collaboration that survives real-world conditions, not just ideal network diagrams.
Why Puerto Rico and the Caribbean matter in this story
For many federal programs, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean are not “edge” in a metaphorical sense—they are literally the edge:
Maritime chokepoints, ports and coastal facilities
Power and water infrastructure exposed to hurricanes and aging assets
Remote communities where connectivity can be intermittent
Training grounds and testbeds for OCONUS scenarios
ORVIWO is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) rooted in Puerto Rico and focused on tactical IT & smart security solutions across Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and LATAM.
By combining Azure for US Government with ORVIWO’s tactical edge designs, agencies can:
Prove concepts at the “tactical edge” in Puerto Rico
Scale those patterns to other OCONUS and CONUS environments
Meet both mission requirements and compliance expectations
How ORVIWO can help your Azure for Government projects
If your agency, program office or prime contractor is:
Exploring Azure for US Government, Azure for DoD or JWCC
Planning to deploy Azure AI / Azure OpenAI for mission analytics
Designing tactical edge architectures with vehicles, IoT, routers and AI video
Trying to unify cybersecurity from cloud to field
ORVIWO can help design and implement the cloud-to-edge blueprint that connects Azure to the real terrain of Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and similar OCONUS environments.
Cloud is not the mission.
Cloud + tactical edge + local realities is the mission.
